Boosting Morale When Times Are Tough

Workplace morale is crucial to the success of any business. Good morale means improved team spirit and increased productivity. A team that is positive and enjoys their work are more likely to be loyal and to bring their own ideas to the table. They will stick with you through tough times and help you to improve your business. A workplace with positive morale gets more done, produces higher quality work, attracts the best staff and faces far fewer legal and HR issues.

When things are going well, it’s easy to keep morale up. When things are going well, our workplaces often run like well oiled and incredibly efficient machines. Everyone’s happy, fewer mistakes are made, and people love coming into work.

But, what about when things aren’t going as well? Perhaps when sales are low, there’s been a destructive influence in the office, or even when a global pandemic has forced you to change some of your systems. It’s easy to keep morale up when things are good but much harder to lift it when it’s hit bottom.

Make Life as Easy as You Can

Ask yourself what you can do to make your team’s lives easier? Relax Some of the Rules

Could it be that some of your strict rules and regulations are causing unnecessary stress and upset? While some of these rules might be crucial, if your business is going through a rough time, could you temporarily relax some of the rules? Or at least know when to pick your battles.


Communication is a crucial element of any successful business. It’s also a key component to good workplace morale and often one of the best, and easiest things that you can do to boost the mood in your workplace. Speak with your team, set goals and targets, effectively communicate any changes, and take the time to listen to what they have to say.

Celebrate Wins

When things aren’t going as well as you’d like, it becomes more important than ever that you celebrate your business’s successes, and the wins of individuals, however small they might be.

Encourage Creativity

Your team members might be full of ideas on how to improve things or new services and products that you could offer. They may have ideas to help morale out for the low times. Some won’t work, but some of their ideas might be great. Encourage your team to think creatively and to share any ideas that they may have. Show gratitude and praise even when you don’t take their ideas forwards.

Morale is something that will have natural peaks and slumps. Some of these fluctuations will be caused by things that you can control; others won’t. But, it’s always worth doing your best to bring morale back up.
